James Spry, butcher, listed in Cumberland Street in Pigot's Directory of 1822
A copy of James Spry's will is held in the Devon Record Office at Exeter (Ref 1078/IRW/S/1229. The will was made on 23 Dec 1847. It appoints son John Spry as executor and leaves to him the bulk of the property owned by James Spry, including houses 88 Cambridge Street, the public house called 'The Union Inn', 12 St. John Street, and 2 Cumberland Street. His wife Alice Spry receives an annuity of £20 and the income in rents from the lettings. In a codicil, a second son William Spry is mentioned who gets £50 and James Spry's silver watch!
