George

Born 7 Jan 1840, Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon
Died 5 Jun 1911, Durham
George Body was instrumental in building a new church in Brandon, a mining village, - St Agatha's Mission Church - in 1893. The church was closed in 1956 and appears to have been demolished to make way for housing - St Agatha's Close. Durham university appear to hold some clippings from the Durham Advertiser about a controversial speech Canon Body made in 1887 to Durham undergraduates! The Janus archive, Cambridge university also hold a letter from Canon Body in relation to a sermon he preached (presumably in Cambridge) on 25 Jan 1900.
Educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton, and graduated from St John's College, Cambridge, in 1862. He received the hon. D. D. degree at Durham University in 1885. He was ordained deacon in 1863 and priest in 1864 for service in the diocese of Lichfield, and became curate of Wednesbury. He was subsequently curate of Sedgley (1865-67) and of Christ Church, Wolverhampton (1867-70). In 1870 he was nominated by Lord Feversham to the rectory of Kirby-Misperton, Yorks. In 1880 the clergy of the North Riding chose him as their Proctor in Convocation. In 1883 Bishop Lightfoot appointed him to a Canonry in Durham Cathedral, with the intention he should concern himself with parochial mission work in the diocese. He was several times select preacher at Cambridge, where he gave the course of lectures on pastoral theology in 1897.

He conducted missions amongst the miners of Durham. During Lent he preached in London's West End churches and asked that financial help should be given to his mission work.
